Apple Boosts IPhone, IPod Touch Capacity

apple Inc. updated its IPhone and ipod Touch lineup Tuesday, doubling the memory and setting a new premium price for its high-end models.

The latest IPhone features 16 gigabytes of memory and retails for $499. The previously released 8 GB version of the hybrid cell phone, multimedia player and wireless Internet device costs $399.

The new ipod Touch comes with 32 GB of memory and retails for $499. The older 16 GB and 8 GB versions of the combination multimedia player wireless Internet gadget cost $399 and $299, respectively.

The new devices are available through apple’s online and retail stores. The updated IPhone is also available through AT&T Inc.’s online and retail stores.

apple said that all IPhone and ipod Touch models come with updated software that the company announced in January. It includes a new maps application and the ability to watch movies from the iTunes movie rental service.

apple shares fell 34 cents to $130.31 in pre-market trading.

First Trojan for Apple iPhone spreading fast

The first Trojan program has reached iPhone, the most popular and innovative gadget for year 2007 from Apple. According to the US Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT), software called "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep" is available online for iPhone users. The software update is projecting itself as an important update before Apple's much awaited 1.1.3 update is officially released.

When the user downloads the software and installs it, the Trojan displays the word "shoes". If the user tries to uninstall the Trojan, a number of applications such as Doom, OpenSSH, Launcher and Erica's Utilities are removed, meaning that the user will have to reinstall those applications.

The US-CERT has issued a warning that a fraudulent iPhone upgrade is making its way around the Internet and users should not be fooled into installing it.

The security firms Symantec and F-Secure have also confirmed the news of first Trojan for Apple iPhone.
Orla Cox, an Antivirus Expert at Symantec said, “This is technically the first Trojan horse seen for the iPhone, however it does appear to be more of a prank than an actual threat."

The impact of uninstalling the 'Trojan' would appear to be an unintended side effect. The risk to users is minimal as they would have to choose to install the bogus package and the site which was hosting it has now been taken offline. Nevertheless, iPhone users should exercise caution regarding the packages they choose to install on their phones," he added.

One website has reportedly claimed that 11-year old child had developed this Trojan accidentally, while he was playing with XML files. The Apple iPhone was released in the United States on June 29 and in select European countries during November last year.

Apple warns that iPhone unlocks could cripple handsets

Apple has warned that any buyer of its iPhone who has attempted to make the mobile phone work with alternative mobile networks could find the phone broken when it is next updated.

Apple signed lucrative deals with AT&T in the US and O2 in the UK so that those were the only networks in their countries to be allowed to sell the combined web browser, MP3 player and phone.

A number of individuals and companies have made fixes available which 'unlock' the phone so that it can be used on other networks. Apple now says that users of those fixes face their phones being broken the next time their handset is updated.

"Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software," said an Apple statement.

The company said that unlocking the phone "will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed."

The company has said that unlocking phones renders guarantees invalid. It said that though it will not deliberately attempt to break phones that have been unlocked, it will not attempt to avoid software clashes that could result in broken handsets.

Last week while launching the iPhone in the UK, Apple founder and chief executive Steve Jobs said that his company would try hard to stop consumers from using the phone on other networks.

"It's a cat-and-mouse game," said Jobs at the London launch, according to Computerworld. "We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it's our job to stop them breaking in."

Users who have used unlocking software could choose not to download Apple's updates of the phone's software if they wanted to carry on using their unlocked phone.
