First iPhone Reviews

Early reviews of the iPhone are starting to trickle in from the handful of mainstream tech reviewers who have been blessed with review units. Reviews are all rather positive as expected. These reviews do give us a better picture of the phones capabilities. My take:

The pluses:

* Battery life is amazingly good, around 8 hours of talking, browsing or video playback - easily double what other phones of this size and capabilities can muster. How did Apple accomplish that?
* Reviewers were universally pleased with the devices usability, even the virtual keyboard, although Newsweek's Steven Levy opined that the Blackberry's keyboard was better for heavy users of mobile email.
* The iPhone's WiFi is said to work well and be easy to configure.
* The big screen and great browser deliver the best full web browsing experience of any phone when a WiFi connection is available .
* PDF, Word and Excel email attachments can be viewed and are rendered very faithfully.
* Video playback is excellent - smooth and, I think, full screen.
* Google Maps is a native OS X application and works great.
* Contacts and Calendar items are easily synced from Outlook using iTunes.

Minuses:

* The big screen and great browser makes the slowness of ATT's Edge data service painfully obvious when visiting full web sites.
* PDF, Word and Excel documents can be viewed but they can't be edited or even saved.
* There is no copy and paste for text.
* You can't use your music files as ringtones.
* No IM, MMS or voice dialing.
* The camera can't shoot video.
* You have to tell Google your location. I knew there wasn't any GPS but was hoping that ATT would make the location information that it derives from cell location for E911 available to the Google application.

It's pretty clear that the iPhone is a breakthrough device that will forever change the way people look at and use mobile phones. This phone will open a lot of eyes to just how practical the internet can be on a phone. You can be sure that Nokia, Motorola and all the other mobile phone companies are working overtime trying to top the iPhone. As for the iPhone itself, provided it works reasonably well, it will be a huge success. All the limitations of this first release, except the lack of 3G, can be fixed by software upgrades which Apple has said will be distributed through iTunes.

Apple’s iPhone may get GPS capability

It looks like Apple is joining the growing list of companies that are finding ways to use the global-positioning system in their own devices.

The Web site Engadget says it received a fuzzy-looking image of an Apple iPhone showing a GPS application under development by the Dutch company, TomTom.

If that’s true, Steve Jobs is using his head. It’s a different type of cell phone distraction, but a GPS capability would trump just about anything the iPhone doesn’t already have, except for maybe the clunky wireless network it uses.

I wonder if Apple can make it available by summer when everybody’s taking drive trip for vacation.

Business in FOCUS

Iphone software unlock finally in the wild

TODAY MARKS D-DAY for the legions of buyers keen to get their hands on an Iphone, but not so keen to sign up to two years of AT&T service - the day that the unlock hits the virtual shelves of retailers across the globe.

Iphone Sim Free, the company behind the unlock, has frustrated users over the past three weeks by demonstrating a software-based unlock - which doesn't require a user to take apart the Iphone - but then compounding delay after delay with bad communications and shadowy business practices.

However, the legions of Apple fanboys who have been taking them to task have, characteristically, changed themselves into fawning groupies as the software is distributed to Iphone users and has been proved to work in the 'real world'. The UK's very own Paul Taylor had the honour of being first man in line.

This means that any Joe can pick up an Iphone from an Apple store, run this software and plonk in a Vodafone or T-Mobile card with impunity - a kick in the teeth to the network which spent millions bending over backwards to meet Apple's specifications, not to mention the European networks still yet to launch.

The cost of the unlock - around $50 bought through a reseller - has angered those in the 'open hacking' community who have expected to see a free unlock developed by enthusiasts. They have promised to reverse engineer the Iphone Sim Free hack before the week is out and make it available for free.

Meanwhile, Apple claims to have sold its one millionth phone, keeping it on track for 10 million sales by the end of 2008.
With Iphone owners already a little 'touchy' about the new Ipod Touch, at least a carrier unlock is something to be happy about.
